THE DRUM MACHINE 909

The Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer is a partially analog drum kit, based on samplesbuilt by Roland Corporation in 1984. The drum machine  contained the following sounds:

KickBoxTom lowTom mediumTom highRim shotSlap
Hi-hat (open or closed, but not both at the same time)
Saucer (ride or crash)

All the percussions, except the hi-hats and cymbals, were generated synthetically, it has an oscillator circuit with a dedicated filter and an envelope curve. The hi-hats and the cymbals were 6-bit samples, compressed and combined with an envelope volume curve (and adjustment) to allow slight modifications. Thanks to the analog circuit, various aspects of the percussion sound can be modified (tone, attack, decay). It also has a function called "accent" (accent); a primitive way to humanize the rhythms. In a simplified model of a drummer and his drums, the volume of sound created would depend basically on the speed at which the drummer impacts a specific part of his equipment. a human drummer can emphasize certain notes by playing them with greater volume, and the accent parameter provided a means to enhance a particular step.
